Controlling vehicular access and preventing vehicle theft

Physical access control at the perimeter and within mine properties is essential to ensure that only authorised people enter and exit the premises, thereby ensuring protection of assets.

A number of vehicle and pedestrian barriers and physical access control solutions are available to ensure that both the perimeter and the areas within a mine property are secured from unwanted ingress and egress.

Boomgate System’s Genius Rapid Access Barriers have proven themselves in the field. With built-in LED indication, there is no need for extra traffic robots to be installed. Rapid Spike barriers help prevent vehicle theft at the mine employee parking areas.

Intruder protection

Texecom kits and alarm panels ensure that management is instantly alerted when intrusion occurs. Aligned to the alarm systems and motion detectors (internal and external) are complementary products such as communicators and smoke detectors.

The Texecom Connect app lets users access and control their security system directly from their smartphone or tablet. Texecom security solutions are suited to use throughout mines.

The Ajax range of wireless intruder detection and fire detection products provide mining clients with the advantages of rapid and easy installation, coupled with complete mobility.

Products which are of specific relevance in the mining space include:

• MotionCam Outdoor recognises intrusion and confirms it with a series of animated photos. Visual verification helps to instantly ascertain the situation.
• Motion Protect plus is a 2-in-1 glass protect and motion protect unit. It detects motion, LISA-analyses it and compares signal forms from two sensors in real-time. If forms are similar, the alarm is raised.
• Door Protect plus is a 2-in-1 vibration detector and door protect unit. The DoorProtect opening detector notifies of first signs of room intrusion by means of a broken door or window.
• LeaksProtect identifies pipe breakage and leaks. It raises the alarm with the first flood signs and notifies users when the water dries up.
• FireProtect is a wireless fire detector that provides instant alerts about smoke detection or a rapid temperature rise. The device detects smoke by means of a camera with photoelectric sensor. If no smoke is emitted, the additional detector registers temperature increases in the room.

The Redwall SIP series PIRs from Optex are designed to be connected to PTZ or fixed cameras and trigger the CCTV system when an intrusion occurs.

The SIP-3020WF has two independent detection zones, far and near zones, with independent sensitivity selection, that can trigger camera pre-set and provide the best view of the scene to local security staff or remote monitoring stations.

This model is the wire free version and is designed to be powered by batteries, with an optional radio transmitter for locations where cabling can be challenging. They are ideal for use in harsh outdoor environments, such as on mines, and the sensitivity can be adjusted automatically to the ambient temperature and illuminance.

Keeping the power flowing

Load shedding or in areas where a power supply is not available, can be challenging for mines. Elvey has five Uniross Lithium batteries and various accessories that ensure consistent power supply to devices. In addition to the standard range, Elvey can build batteries to customer-specific requirements.

Explosion-proof alternative to firearms

In certain areas on mines traditional firearms cannot be used by security personnel due to the risk of ignition of explosive materials on discharge of the weapon. Powered by compressed air (CO2), Byrna Launchers shoot .68 calibre round kinetic projectiles and chemical irritant projectiles that can disable a threat from up to 20 metres away, in an explosion-proof manner.

The solution includes the Byrna SD Security Box, Byrna Mission 4 Rifle, 95 of the Byrna Max Projectiles and a Byrna Level 2 Holster XL for right-hand or left-hand use.

Preventing cable theft

Commercial ICT has developed a cable monitoring and power alerting system that utilises Permaconn’s devices and Pocket Secure App for real-time alerting and providing a communication platform for delivering the alerts into the monitoring centre. even in the most remote locations like mines. The PM54, linked to the Permaconn App, provides alarm signals, control and video images via the Permaconn app.

The system allows for notifications to be easily labelled according to the sub stations, circuit breakers or distribution points conforming to the mine’s existing naming conventions.

The solution includes the CM12 Cable Theft DIN-mount device, that can protect up to 12 cables per unit, and a choice of five Rogowski coils.
